Whatever Happened to Enrique Cruz? Find Out the Answer and Party at the Same Time!

Today, I got a promotional flyer with a name on it that I haven’t seen in a while.
Enrique Cruz!!!
In the mid-90’s, Cruz led a revolution in “blatino porn” – which roughly describes the category of porn featuring young black and latino men from the streets of New York. Consciously discarding borderline racist depictions of dumb, drug-dealing hustlers put forth in the 1980’s, Enrique Cruz’s “Men of LaMancha” were a fresh young mix of urban swagger and clean-cut good looks.
Asking “whatever happened to Enrique Cruz” isn’t like tracking down old porn stars who have retired and become dental assistants. A few seconds with Google (or maybe just typing in enriquecruz.com) will let you know what Mr. Cruz has been up to.
After his big studio deal with Vivid Raw when sour, he set up shop online and has been making blatino porn ever since. (His current series Doin’ the Butt is up to number 24!!! Who knew?)
Cruz’s past videos, Off Da Hook, Aprende and Learning Latin were some of the best DVDs of the 1990’s. But subsequent releases, Aprende 2 and Reloaded made me feel like I wasted my money and wasn’t too eager to try again.
Maybe there will be some DVD giveaways at this week’s party that will make me re-discover Enrique’s stuff. Can’t wait to party on Tuesday night, Jan 22nd at Splash Bar in New York City!
UPDATE 1/26/08 – Great party! Great music! Great boys!
The night didn’t start well. Most of the latin dancers upstairs seemed bored out of their minds and more interested in chatting amongst themselves. But, things picked up after 1am. The black boys were on fire all night like dancing sex machines.
After an amazingly dull game of “anal ring toss” that seemed to go on longer than the Winter Olympics, about 20 guys closest to the stage were able to snag a few free DVDs. (Isn’t it a dumb idea to not give out more? Considering that these weren’t fully packaged DVDs, but recorded DVD-Rs (costing maybe 50 cents a piece) wouldn’t it be a good return on investment in terms of marketing to get a disc in everyone’s hands?
After 2am, the latin boys came to life and things started to heat up. The crowd was nice, mixed, and kept the vibe going ’til closing time.
