I finally got a chance to check out Take ‘Em Down #3, and I really enjoyed it!

This week, I picked up the newly released Ultimate Starz from author Owen Keehnen and liked it so much, I went back and picked up More Starz (2007.)

No time for a full review (particularly since both books are jam-packed with interviews with dozens and dozens of gay porn stars.) Keehnen covers a wide spectrum of gay porn. There are a few porn stars that I’ve always wanted to know more about, and it’s good to finally get some biographical info on them (Just to name a few … Adriano Marquez, Martin Mazza, Damian Rios, and Antonio Biaggi.)

There are times when the Q&A format of the book only scratches the surface of porn stars with wild lives that could fill several chapters. To his credit, Owen Keehnen brings the skills of a researcher to the book and provides a little biographical data on all of the models. Nothing too deep; just a quick book that flies by.

Reading about today’s gay porn stars, I was surprised at how normal and emotionally stable many of them are. As someone who got into “studying” porn culture in the ’90’s, I was expecting more drug overdoses, street prostitution, and suicide attempts. In fact, my first exposure to Keehnen’s writing was his interview with Austin Black. It’s currently archived on his site and was republished after Black was found dead in his apartment in 2006. It’s a great little time capsule of gay porn bitchiness and insanity.
